Filling a plaster pool with water from a salt type softener will severely damage the plaster. Avoid salt that says crystals as they may have dirt mixed in with the salt which will end up in your swimming pool. It is clean and pure and has no additives. Adding pool salt does not alter the ph level of the pool but the chemicals present in the softener salts change the ph of the pool.

Water softener salt that says solar or pellets on the bag are very pure salt and will work fine for swimming pool use. The ph level can either raise or decrease. If you take the same salt that was used for pool salt and press it into pellets you have water softener salt. Providing that the water softener salt is very pure and free of debris or additives you can use some types of water softener salt for your swimming pool.

The ph is easy to adjust but you could avoid this by simply adding pool salt to your swimming pool. You can check the salt level in your water softener manually or with a salt monitor. If you are checking manually lift the cover of your tank and observe the salt level if it s lower than 6 inches or less than half full then add more salt. A salt monitor on the other hand is easier to use.

There is no need to use water softener salt that has any additives in it if you are. As per the above points it is clear that you cannot use softener salt for your pool.
